November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month
During this month of November, we are very thankful for our responsible patients. We would also like to share some information on diabetic eye disease to potentially improve your personal awareness. Diabetic eye disease is surprisingly common and is the lead cause of blindness in adults aged 20 to 74 years. Once your eyesight is damaged from diabetes it is difficult to fully restore, making annual eye exams extremely important for patients with diabetes. We would like to keep your vision as clear as we can, so if this is a possible concern let us know!

Diabetes is part of Our Community
Diabetes is very common in Hawai’i, so we want you to know the ways that diabetic eye disease can be prevented or managed. Here are four ways that diabetic people can keep their eyes at their healthiest:
1. Come in for an eye exam every year.
2. Make sure to regulate your blood sugar.
3. Keep track of your cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
4. Avoid tobacco use.
All in all, take care of yourself! We would like to see you at your healthiest and are happy to help as always.
Our office is open during the Coronavirus Pandemic
We are taking extra safety precautions during this time by only allowing a few patients in the office at all times, a sanitizing station outside the office doors, and enforcing mandatory masks during your visit. Please call to schedule an appointment at 808-935-3937. All services are by appointment only including repairs, adjustments, and glasses pick ups. Please arrive to your appointment promptly on time, in order to help us control the amount of patients in the office and enforce social distancing regulations. We thank you for your patience during this unprecedented time while we work to keep you safe and provide the best care possible for you.
If you have had any flu-like symptoms in the last 48 hours, please stay home and self-quarantine or isolate. Fully vaccinated individuals who are currently experiencing symptoms should stay home and reschedule their appointment, unless caused by a chronic medical condition. If you have a chronic medical condition that causes COVID-19 like symptoms, please obtain medical documentation from your primary care physician on whether you can be safely granted optometric care at this time.
Our office is equipped with the most advanced Clarus Fundus camera and OCT Angiography machine to perform comprehensive Diabetic Eye Exams and Glaucoma Evaluations. Give us a call to schedule your annual diabetic appointment.
Big Island Vision Center is a veteran owned practice, and we wish everyone a happy veteran’s day! We hope to honor those who’ve served in our work, and we thank them for their service.
